Stucco Finishes

Types of Stucco Finishes & Material Types

Synthetic Stucco Finish (Synthetic or Traditional) – A smooth finish with rough areas in between (also known as inclusions) which vary in size and shape.

Popcorn Stucco Finish (Synthetic or Traditional) – A sprayed-on finish that can be applied light, medium or heavy in volume to create a unique look. This texture can be applied by hand (for smaller areas) or sprayed on (using a small hopper gun). Two to three coats are usually applied in order to achieve a uniform coat.

Texture Stucco Finish (Traditional) – The lace finish is the most common found on homes and is usually what people think of when they think of stucco. This texture can hide many imperfections and is great for virtually any application, residential or commercial.

Sand Stucco Finish (Synthetic or Traditional) – This is a basic and simple kind of texture that is popular in commercial applications. It can be fine, medium or coarse in appearance and varies depending on the manufacturer. It is troweled down and finished using a float and quick strokes.

Smooth Stucco Finish (Traditional) – This is like a smooth finish, but the brown coat is not flat like in the smooth coat. The brown in the Santa Barbara Finish has depth to it, which gives the finish a little more character and elegance.

Worm Stucco Finish (Synthetic) – Trowels leave little groove-like indentations in the texture. It is not a very common finish and can only be achieved with a synthetic stucco mix that uses special aggregates in it.

Stucco damage comes in many forms:

  • Spider cracks & imperfections
  • Water / Rain & Flood damage
  • Structure settlement
  • Non weatherproof paint

General South Florida Stucco Questions

What is stucco?

Stucco is a durable, cement-based plaster used for exterior and interior wall finishing. It consists of sand, Portland cement, lime, and water.

Why is stucco popular in South Florida?
Stucco is common in South Florida due to its durability, resistance to heat, and compatibility with Mediterranean-style architecture, which is popular in the region.

Is stucco weather-resistant?
Yes, stucco is highly resistant to heat and UV rays, making it ideal for South Florida’s sunny climate. However, proper installation is crucial for weatherproofing against rain and humidity.

Does stucco crack in hot climates?
Yes, stucco can develop cracks from thermal expansion and contraction, especially if not properly installed or maintained.

Is stucco suitable for hurricanes?
Stucco can hold up well during hurricanes if properly applied over a solid substrate. However, water intrusion can occur if cracks are not sealed.

Stucco Installation and Costs

How long does it take to install stucco?
The process can take 2–4 weeks, depending on the project’s size and complexity, as it involves multiple layers that need curing time.

What is the cost of stucco installation in South Florida?
Installation typically costs $6–$9 per square foot, varying based on materials, labor, and preparation needs.

Can stucco be applied over other materials?
Yes, stucco can be applied over wood, concrete block, or metal lath, but the surface must be properly prepared.

How thick should stucco be?
For traditional stucco systems, it should be about ⅞ inch thick when applied over a metal lath.

Do you need a permit to apply stucco in South Florida?
Yes, a permit is typically required for exterior renovations, including stucco, to ensure compliance with local building codes.

Stucco Maintenance and Repairs

How do I maintain stucco in South Florida?
Routine maintenance includes cleaning with mild detergent, sealing cracks, and repainting every 5–7 years to protect against water damage.

Can stucco be painted?
Yes, stucco can be painted with high-quality acrylic paint. Elastomeric paints are also recommended for added flexibility and waterproofing.

What causes stucco to crack?
Cracks can result from improper installation, foundation settling, weather fluctuations, or lack of maintenance.

How do you repair stucco cracks?
Small cracks can be filled with a stucco patch or acrylic caulk. For larger cracks, professional repair is recommended.

How do I prevent mold on stucco in South Florida?
Ensure proper drainage, seal cracks promptly, and clean the surface with a solution of water and bleach to remove mold.

Stucco Climate-Specific Concerns

Is stucco resistant to humidity?
Stucco is breathable, allowing moisture to escape. However, improper installation can trap water, leading to mold or damage.

How does stucco handle heavy rain?
Stucco can resist heavy rain if sealed properly and installed with a moisture barrier beneath the surface.

Does salt air affect stucco near the coast?
Salt air can corrode metal lath or fasteners beneath stucco. Using corrosion-resistant materials and sealing cracks helps mitigate damage.

Can stucco help insulate homes in South Florida?
Stucco provides some thermal insulation, but additional insulation layers are recommended for energy efficiency.

What is the best stucco finish for South Florida?
Smooth and sand finishes are popular as they resist dirt and algae buildup better than rough textures.

Stucco Longevity and Sustainability

How long does stucco last in South Florida?
Properly maintained stucco can last 50–80 years in South Florida’s climate.

Is stucco environmentally friendly?
Stucco is made from natural materials and is energy-efficient due to its thermal properties, making it eco-friendly.

Can stucco homes withstand flooding?
While stucco itself isn’t damaged by water, prolonged flooding can impact the underlying structure, causing issues.

Is stucco fire-resistant?
Yes, stucco is highly fire-resistant and can withstand high temperatures, adding a layer of protection to homes.

How does stucco compare to other siding options in South Florida?
Stucco is more durable and weather-resistant than wood or vinyl, but it requires more maintenance than brick or fiber cement.
